Project Summary
Volunteer in Tanzania. Beautiful Tanzania boasts the highest mountain on the continent, the exotic spice islands of historical and the famous Serengeti National Park. In this country, the Great Rift Valley gives rise to unique geological formations and its endless plains stage one of the greatest spectacles of animal behavior. Volunteering in Tanzania is the perfect way to explore this great country which offers hundreds of different ethnic groups and cultures, from the red-clad herders of the Maasai tribes on the Serengeti plains to the modestly veiled women of ‘s Islamic Stone Town.
Orientation and Discussion (day 1)
Meet with The Maasai Land Explorer local staff members, participate in a general question/answer sessions, discuss the program’s itinerary and review a general orientation about The Maasai Land Explorer programs. Also learn about Tanzania history, culture, tradition and other important issues (health & safety). In your free time (evenings & weekends), you can travel to take in the nearby culture and scenery.
Volunteer Service Projects: Arusha (Days 2-23)
During this time of service, volunteers will work in an orphanage – sharing their love and time with the needy children in various parts of Tanzania. Volunteers will teach basic conversational English and encourage the children as they face a challenging world where English has become more and more essential. Volunteers’ free time allows for hiking to nearby bazaars and/or hillside villages; exploring the beauty of mesmerizing Tanzania and gaining other first-hand experiences of Tanzanian lifestyle, culture and values.
Tanzanian Safari and Excursions (Days 24-28)
After spending quality time with impoverished children of Tanzania, volunteers will embark on a seven-day tent camping tour, traveling the sights of the unrivalled parks of northern Tanzania, recreating the original spirit of the safari. This weeklong safari includes a foot tour of Maasai Land, viewing the Ngorongoro Crater (one of the major attractions of Tanzania and one of the wonders of the natural world), experiencing the Serengeti (one of the best-known wildlife sanctuaries in the world hosting over 3 million large mammals); and travelling to Lake Manyara National Park ( a bird lover’s paradise dually noted for its elusive tree-climbing lions).
This program itinerary is merely a proposed sample and may be altered to meet the needs of the volunteers and changes in field conditions. This proposed itinerary will be finalized during orientation program.

Day 0: ARRIVAL
Day 1: Orientation and Discussion
You will initially meet with The Maasai Land Explorer local staff members, participate in a general question/answer sessions, discuss the program’s itinerary, and go through a general orientation on the IFRE program, as well as learn the history, culture, tradition, and other important issues (health, safety) in Tanzania. In your free time (evenings & weekends), you can travel the nearby culture and scenery.
Day 2-23: Service Projects: Moshi & Arusha
During this phase, volunteers will work in an orphanage -sharing their love and time with the needy children in various parts of Tanzania. They will teach them basic conversational English and encourage them to face the challenging world where English has become more and more necessary. In your free time, you can hike to nearby bazaars and/or hillside villages; explore the beauty of mesmerizing Tanzania – gaining first-hand experiences of Tanzanian lifestyle, culture, and values.
Day 23: Closing of service project, preparation for Safari.
Tanzanian Safari and Excursions (5 Days/4 Nights)
This is a treat you have been waiting for. To round up your stay in Tanzania, you will embark on one of the most breathtaking safaris. You will in tents, safari on local transportation to watch large herds of wild animals, wake up to the sounds of cries from birds and wildlife and move across spectacular terrains.
Day 24: Pick up at your hotel after breakfast and transfer to Lake Manyara for full day safari with picnic lunch. Manyara National Parks boasts a large lake and is 325 sq. kms. It lies in the Great Rift Valley. In July and August, hundreds of flamingos descend in the large to feed and enjoy. The park also contains large herds of elephants and buffalos, enormous troops of baboons and its famous tree-climbing lions.
Day 25: You will travel to the middle of Serengeti in the area known as Seronera to enjoy lunch and observe wildlife. Serengeti is the jewel of Tanzania and is known world over. It is over 15,000 square kilometers and the concentration of wildlife here is unmatched anywhere in the world. The great annual migration millions watched in TV around the world sees more than million wildebeest, over half a million gazelle and slight half that zebras migrate from Serengeti to Masai Mara Park. The landscape of the Park is as spectacular as the wildlife found here.

Day 26: Start your morning with another breathtaking safari in Serengeti. In the afternoon, you will arrive in another very famous park – Ngorongoro Crater – for overnight on the crater rim.

Day 27: After early morning breakfast, you’ll safari before traveling to the Ngorongoro Crater in the afternoon. The Ngorongoro Conservation Area is located on the far east area of the Serengeti and contains four distinct habitats – all offering unparalleled game-viewing opportunities year-round. Some of the phenomenal safari experiences include such epic observations such as the Great Migration – tens of thousands of zebra and wildebeest stampeding across the Serengeti. Also contained within Ngorongoro area are world-renowned archeological sites of Laetoli where some of the oldest proof of human existence can be found – footprints over 3.6 million years old.

Day 28: Enjoy a full day of safari after traveling to Tarangire National Park. You will witness a very large herd of elephants as you enjoy your picnic. Taragrine National Park also has many other wildlife like lions, cheetahs, and leopards, and wildlife like wll and Baobab tree. Tarangire National is an ornithologist’s paradise, offering a variety of feathered species, including some of the most aggressive birds of prey flapping their expansive wings over the famously-varied fauna rich in birds of prey and an incredible diversity of avifauna. The day concludes with a return-trip to Arusha in the evening where participants will remain overnight.

Program Fee Covers:
- Airport pick up
- Domestic, in-park transportation in a modified 4-wheel-drive vehicle including a releasable roof hatch for documenting the experience
- Foods/Meals as per itinerary
- Services of a professional safari guide
- All wildlife reserve entry fees and camping fees
- Comprehensive insurance
Program Fee Does Not Cover:
- Airport Drop-off
- Tips (for safari guide and/or camp staff)
- Other items of personal consumption (i.e. soft drink, bottled water, etc.) Note:
- You program fee covers room and food from the first day (first or third Monday) to the last day of the project. The Maasai Land Explorercovers the cost of room and food for the first day of arrival (usually Sunday) and after the completion of project. If you choose to use The Maasai Land Explorer hostel, you will only be required to pay $30 USD per day for food and accommodation
